Sucker? That's me. This girl right here.

I am such a sucker. Last night I got home from work/errands and was doing some laundry and I heard a knock on my door. This is uncommon because 1) I wasn't expecting anyone 2) I live in the city and people don't just come by and knock or stop over without calling. My apt is a little different than typical apartments because I live in a brownstone, under the stair well and have a private entrance. Ruby, my pup, starts going crazy and I am like oh crap what is it. Nstar has been working on some power issues outside my apartment, so part of me thought it may be that they need to look at my meter or something, who knows. Nope, that wasn't it because there was a larger lady with tattoos carrying a shopping bag standing there on the other side of glass door asking me a question. I have a cast iron gate that normally blocks my entrance to my front door, but since my hands were full I didn't lock. Anyway, Ruby is going crazy, I can't hear her, but I can't open the door because what if she is crazy? It is a possibility.

Lady, who calls her self "Teresa", "Hi, I live across the street at 38 S----."
Me "Yea, why are you in my entrance (I have never seen her before)?"
Teresa "I live across the street and was wondering if you could help me out. My insurance coverage has expired and my son has an ear infection and I have no cash. I work at Boston Medical as a greeter. I am legit (she doesn't look too legit and wreaks of cigs). My husband is a Boston Fire Fighter, but he at work and I don't have any money to get my prescription filled. Oh blah blah. I see you all the time walking your dog (mumbles to Ruby)."
Me "Ummm. ok. What do you need (I am kind of nervous, just want her to go away. Wondering if someone is standing on the stair well behind her... and I really want her to go away)?"
Teresa "50/60 dollars"
Me "What? I don't carry cash in my apt (i.e. don't rob me), but let me see what I have. I may have 10 bucks. (I am an idiot, I am idiot, but I feel bad, what if her son is really sick, what if I am on one of those What Would You Do shows? I am freaked and I really want her to go)."
I go back into my living room and get the cash I have in my bag. 10 dollars.
address)?
Me "Here, all I have is this. I don't ever carry cash, sorry. I hope your son feels better. What is your name and address again?"
Teresa gives me all of her info, supposedly.
Teresa "I will pay you back tomorrow promise before 8:30am. I will slip it under the door, if you aren't home. I appreciate it. You don't have any change do you?"
Me "No, nothing - I am poor, so I hope you keep your word (plsssssss dont rob me)."

She walks away saying I have pretty blonde hair or something.

I am an ass. How could I have done that? I think I was so in shock that I just wanted her to go. At the end of the day, it was only 10 dollars and if she has enough balls to come to my door to beg, she probably needs it more than I do. I promptly locked my gate and kept it locked for the remainder of the night anytime I left or was in the apt. I hope I word doesn't get around in my neighborhood that I am hand out central.

Um, that is kind of sketchy so I can totally understand why you would be worried. We have people that walk up and down our streets all the time trying to sell us stuff and I always get suckered into it. Blah. But hey, if its the truth, at least you did a good thing. And if not, at least you didn't give $50

Yikes that is really scary, I probably would have done the same thing. Be careful and not to scare you, but sometimes people like that tend to watch and know who lives alone etc. When I lived in Boston I was robbed twice so I'm crazy about NEVER answering my door lol.

That's crazy scary. I got suckered into giving money out too. This guy had this sob story about how he left ALL his bags in a cab (which left), he was in NYC for fashion week and had to be at Pratt institute in 20mins... anyway he needed money to get a cab there.

After he pled his case three times... 'cuz at first i was hearing none of it. i began to wonder what if he was telling the truth. Even more what if it were me in that situation, i'd be desperate for someone to believe and help me. He gave me a full name, email, couldnt give me his cell number because he left his phone in his bag which was in the long gone cab, never reached or heard back from him.

After some after thought... i'd been got. At any rate, I guess I did my good deed though. :-)

I wonder if she slipped the money under your door as she promised... keep that gate locked.

I am going to be harsh ... Don't be mad.. but that was STUPID... never open your door to a stranger... with the economy the way it is .. people are crazy... Call and report the incident to the local police so they have it on file..look out your window install a peep hole whatever.. but never randomly open your door if you don't know who is on the other side...

the good people always finish last... she could have gone to a shelter or a church...
